About Segment

Over the years Segment has gone from a simple research tool for personal use, to a large project for medical image analysis. It now consist of more than 90 000 lines of Matlab code and around 10 000 lines of C-code. Major part of the code is written by Einar Heiberg who is with the Cardiac MR group at Lund University. Now there are around 5 persons involved in the Segment development team. In 2007 the company Medviso AB was formed and it currently maintains Segment, but many new features are still provided by the Cardiac MR Group.

My personal philosophy is that software should generally be free for research purposes. Research budgets are tight already as it is. Furthermore, research provides valuable knowledge to the field where the software is used. Therefore I took the decision to after my PhD dissertation release the software freely available to researchers. The response have been way over my wildest dreams. It is now downloaded by 3-4 new research groups per week! Totally it have been downloaded from more than 73 countries! For more details see here.

Since Segment also is available as partly open source code, researchers all over the world then can share the common structure and write own plugins and customize the software. It is also possible to share their acheivements with other researchers by distributing their plugins.

There are some modules that are not available in the Research Only version of Segment. The reason for that is twofold. Firstly, I do not want to release software that contains a lot of bugs, and secondly we in the Cardiac MR group at Lund University want to be able to publish some results with newly developed functionality before releasing it freely available.
